Oh I am Kathryn. It sorta reminds me of a more extreme version of the KFC story. J was at skating and I didn't feel like cooking. There is a KFC across from the rink, so I stopped in for a bucket o'chicken. First and last time. Husband got all whiny about not liking KFC which he could have dealt with if I had gotten the cole slaw, which I didn't. Dearest daughter got all whiny because she didn't like it, preferring the Stew Leonard's fried chicken. They're spoiled by my good cooking, plain and simple.

Sadly, what you describe happens in my house too, minus pneumonia. I would like to say I have the magic solution, but I don't. I read once in a fairly entertaining business book that you can't change behavior-if the person is used to doing xyz, he/she is going to keep doing it. (They had a magic solution, but it isn't really applicable here since you are not marketing a n product.) The only thing you have control over is your behavior and your reaction to theirs. So, no matter how much they complain, scream, cry or beg, don't clean up the living room or cook dinner or drive to school. I guarantee that the mess will still be there tomorrow, the kids won't starve, and the bus still stops on the corner. REST.

This is a very powerful post. I think we all drop the ball at times. Pass something off to someone who is as equally capable of leading. Coming from a person who is trying to enter the workforce after raising her babies, I hope to be in a leadership position soon enough. I also hope that I'm able to not only be a strong team player, but a leader as well. We'll see.

That's a great question Debra. And it's interesting that a publishing dynamo like yourself doesn't like the book question. I too find it doesn't lead to as many insights as it should.

I love these Ellen. Here's my favorite. I ask them to talk about a recent boss. Then I ask "How would ___ describe your strengths and weaknesses?" This inevitably leads to a moment in which they are brutally honest about themselves. I think it has to do with how personal this question becomes when associated with someone who knows them well.

My least favorite question: "what book are you reading now?" It always makes people want to show off.

Thanks Colleen. That's really great advice. I also find that the media training I went through at work, tho more than most interviewers would ever need, is a great help in understanding how people react under these circumstances.

I'm enjoying your blog so much. I especially like this post. I like interviewing.

What great questions to ask! My advice to an interviewee -- and an interviewer -- is to find a way to be comfortable in your own skin, put on your best dinner party face, and create a conversation together (guided by the interviewer, of course).

I miss interviewing people and for jobs. One nice part of my job, though, is that every editing or writing project gives me the opportunity to meet someone new. Conducting yourself in those circumstances draws on interviewing skills.

Thank you for this Ellen. I think too many of us get lost in the pink of breast cancer. As someone who has watched a loved one battle with it, it is being there for them when it matters that counts. The reality is that long before the pink ribbon movement women were battling this disease with a lot less publicity. Now we need to make sure that those taking on this and other cancers have support. I am going to call the local cancer clinic and see if they need any knitting donations. Caps, lap blankets, cloths, or other items to help the patients. Then I just need to see where I can contact to assist with the yarn donations.
