Back to school (almost)
It’s kind of weird to have a 2 week summer vacation, but that’s the life of the IT Boy. Last Friday was the final day for Boy at his early intervention pre-school. The day after Labor Day, he will start in at a new CPSE pre-school. That means for us 2 weeks without school and very few …
Therapy Schmerapy
Recently, I was hearing a report from Boy’s physical therapist that made me chuckle. She had tested him on some Peabody score markers, and wasn’t happy with his results. Instead of kicking a ball, he throws it with both hands over his head. He doesn’t throw overhand, only underhand. He catches balls with both hands …
Diagnois: No Diagnosis
I’ve blogged a few times about how we have continued to seek a diagnosis for IT Boy, only to wind up with no diagnosis. He’s 2.6 years old, and we know little more about what’s causing his delays than we did when we first started noticing something was up. Genetic testing turned up nothing. One …
State of My State
Things around here seem to have stabilized into what I can best describe as “the new normal.” My grandmother is safely ensconced in a nursing home. The place is good, and she’s doing as well as can be expected, although her PT seems to be ready to discharge her from his service. It’s hard to …
I feel like I am in an episode of "24" and the clock is ticking, just not in a good way
Editors note – if this post feels a bit confusing, it’s because you don’t have a special needs kid. Sorry to use the lingo without a lot of translation. I thought we were getting a head start on the search for IT Boy’s preschool. He’s transitioning from an EI only program where he ages out …
Catching Up
You know it’s been a long time in blogging when you have to re-login to WordPress… Anyhow, it’s not for lack of something to say. I’ve had two business trips in the past 3 weeks, and even though they are not long, with the schedule I keep on the home front, short trips take as much out …
State of the Boy, First Edition of 2009
I haven’t written much about the Boy, because in a macro sense at least, things are business as usual. He’s still in his pre-school in the morning and entertaining his motley crew of home service providers in the afternoon. He’s making progress, in some areas more than others, but it certainly tells us we are …
A Work In Progress
IT Boy has been in school just under a month. Overall, things are going as well as can be expected, when you take into account what a radical chance preschool is for the boy. Here’s how his weekdays go…He goes to his grandmother’s house for breakfast while we go to work. She puts him on …
1 week, 5 days
IT Boy just completed day 5 of school. It’s out of order, but I’m counting it as a week. And a success. We had a couple of painful moments when the staff didn’t realize that his busing had not started yet, and they put him in line for the bus. Realizing I was upstairs waiting …
School Daze
We’ve finally settled on a plan for IT Boy in terms of a preschool. He’s not going to attend the nursery school that his sister went to in the 2′s, at least not this year. We found a (hopefully) great program nearby that is run through Early Intervention and specializes in kids with language and developmental …
So, ummm, what brings you here?
We’re going to visit our first of 3 pre-school programs to check them out for “IT-Boy-ness” today. I had grand plans to put together a huge list of questions to ask everyone at the program, but only mustered about 5. If anyone has any suggestions for evaluating a program, sort of like a link to …
Giving up the ghost
This fall, IT Boy turns 2. It’s also the time he’s going to start going to pre-school. We signed him up when he was about 6 months, to get him a place in the wonderful nursery school that his sister went to. It’s the place where I cried when I sent her on her first …
He's a walking man
The biggest news in the world of IT Boy is his progress in walking. He’s gone from cruising, and taking steps around the furniture, to walking distances, and now getting up on his own in the middle of the room and taking off. It’s been a joy to see, going from wondering if he would …
Over the speed bump
IT Boy is making really good progress these days. He’s walking, albeit only when we steady him into a standing position, but he can take a few steps by himself, which is huge. He’s pointing up a storm, and learning to use his signs. The only complaint I have is in the category of vocabulary. …
