I’ve written a bit about how our family copes with seasonal allergies. Last year was quite challenging for us, and we had a good many days with runny noses and stuffy heads.
I usually take a generic medication that you can get at one of the warehouse clubs – mine comes in bottles of 365 so I figure they want me to take one every day. For the most part, this works for me. However, last year there were a few days where pollen counts were high and nothing was working. I had never tried Allegra and got a sample at BlogHer, so I figured, why not. It ended up knocking out every allergy symptom I had. It also reved me up a bit too much, so I ended up taking a 12 hour pill to cover a 24 hour period, and that worked well.
So when IT Boy was having issues this year, I thought it was a good time for him to try Allergra. I was sent a sample of the product, and we put it to good use. He usually uses a prescription nasal spray and another OTC med. I substituted Allegra for the the OTC med and was quite pleased with the results. His nose was much less running faucet like and he seemed to feel better. He didn’t have an increase in his activity level nor did I notice any other ill effects from the product. I’m certainly going to keep our cabinet stocked with Allergra so I can take on allergy season and win.
Here are some tips for relieving allergies in kids, from the Allegra site:
- Clean often and try to keep clutter to a minimum
- Plastic covers for pillows and mattresses can help repel dust
- Wash bedding in hot water every 7 to 14 days
- Remove stuffed animals from kids’ beds
- Keep windows closed to keep pollen from blowing in
- Keep air ducts clean to reduce dust
- Don’t use fans—they stir up dust
- Using an air purifier can help your child breathe easier
I would also add bathing at night – this was recommended by my allergist, who suggested it as a method to get the pollen and other allergies accumulated through the day off the hair and body before bed. I do the same, and it definitely contributes to feeling better.
Disclosure – I was given a supply of Allegra for my son to try. I am not a doctor, this is my own personal experience and your mileage may vary. You should seek the advice of a medical professional.
