You Make Me Want to SHOUT and Let it All Out…

This weekend, I drove Soccer Girl to her camp reunion. It was held in a Dave and Buster’s near Roosevelt Field on Long Island. My college roommate Liz also sends her daughter to the camp, and we made arrangements to have lunch after the reunion and peruse the mall.

On the way home, I heard the song “Shout” come on the radio. This is a song that makes me think immediately of Liz. When we were in college, she always requested this song when we went out dancing. It was her favorite to get down and crazy on the dance floor to.

Wait, are you thinking it’s this song?

No, no. I’m talking about THIS ONE…

Yeah, for some reason I can’t explain, that was Liz’s go-to dance ditty.  She’d request it, usually at a long-gone club like 288 Lark or QE2 - the DJ would look at her strangely, but eventually take the chance and play it.  As soon as the music turned from upbeat fare like New Order or Depeche Mode to Tears for Fears, most on the dance floor would decide it was time for a drink or bathroom break.  Not Liz and her crew.  We’d be out there grooving to the beat, as best as one can groove to that beat.  Liz knew how to work it, that’s for sure.  Only she could do that shimmy and shift to the music.  The rest of us looked like we were trying to shake an errant piece of lint out of our clothes.

When I told this story to Soccer Girl, she listened to the music and thought about how exactly one would dance to it.  In the end, she decided to file that bit of knowledge under “the 80′s were weird”, the same place she puts so many other things.  For me, it was fun to bring that out of the memory drawer, if only for a little bit.
