It’s been a little quiet around these parts. Sure stuff is going on at work and at home, but we have a new social media crisis brewing for the IT Girl.
I’ve been banned from Facebook.
Again.
But this time, we’re not talking about Dummies Man. We’re talking about me. Ellen Gerstein. Real live flesh and blood IT Girl. BANNED.
It started innocently enough. I got a FB email from a co-worker, saying there was a video of me that I should see. Normally, I would totally ignore something like this. But said co-worker was not the type to send something spammy or illegal, so I looked. And clicked. And that’s where the trouble started.
Now, I am not blaming the co-worker in the least. She didn’t have anything to do with setting up that video site. What the site did was two fold – it downloaded a pesky hijack trojan and got into my Facebook account and started spamming people. The latter is, apparently, why my Facebook account was shut down.
I emailed Facebook instantly and asked them to reinstate my account. Emailed it to every address on the site I could fine, which wasn’t many.
That was Sunday night, and except for a form email saying that my email was received, I haven’t heard jack squat from Facebook. I re-emailed them today and STILL have not heard anything.
I’m kind of dismayed. The lack of any sort of contact from Facebook is making me feel like I did something wrong. Sure, I fell into a spammer’s trap and I SHOULD know better, but it wasn’t my fault, so why am I being treated like a criminal? Why do I have to plead my case? Why isn’t anyone from Facebook, other than our author, getting back to me?
Anyone else have horrible experiences like this with your account going bye bye?

I hope your account gets reinstated soon. It would be terrible to lose everything you’ve added and uploaded and all of your friends! FB customer service should have gotten back to you by now. This could have happened to anyone, and I’m sure others were affected too. It’s sad not seeing you on facebook
I can’t believe your account got shut down since Facebook knows there’s a hijack trojan going around. There’s all kinds of postings about it online. I received similar messages from a couple of my Facebook friends, and almost clicked through for the same reasons you mention above.
It took me forever to get the actual messages deleted from my page so that no one else would see it and click through.
This is the first I’ve heard of anybody’s account getting shutdown for it though. What crap.
Darn Facebook. I was thinking of signing up too. I hope it all gets straightened out for you.
I sure did have a similar issue with Comcast for my email and they have not fixed the problem for 2 months, I can receive but not send; (they don’t seem to have a workable fix for Vista and to add insult to injury now t cant even send my own company messages to my self – they have blocked my company from sending to my home email — And I own they company and have never sent ANY spam to anyone — I only send to legit customers who physically signed up with their info at my booths! And their has been no virus or spamming hits caught in my Vista Defender systems so how do you convince them theat you are legitimately being wronged! Now I have seen reports that comcast will be blocking downloads after “x” mbs per month — what has happened to the free world of the internet ????
